Things To Do in Rancho Cordova & Surrounding Areas

Looking for a great time outdoors? How about an afternoon exploring the Antique Plaza in Rancho Cordova? There is no shortage of ways to fill your time in our area. And here are some great ideas.

Outdoor Recreation

Sacramento State Aquatic Center
The Aquatic Center is a year-round multi-use aquatic facility that offers a variety of programs for all ages. The tranquil waters of the lake offer a perfect environment for learning the basics of canoeing, kayaking or water-skiing. If water sports are not for you, just spend an afternoon at the beach area, which boasts picnic tables and barbecue equipment.

Folsom Lake State Recreational Area
Located at the base of the Sierra foothills, the 18,000-acre lake and recreation area offers opportunities for hiking, biking, running, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, water-skiing and boating. Fishing offers trout, catfish, big- and small-mouth bass, or perch. For cyclists, there is a 32-mile bicycle path that connects Folsom Lake to many Sacramento County parks before reaching Old Sacramento. The park also includes Lake Natoma, downstream from Folsom Lake, which is popular for crew races, sailing, kayaking and other aquatic sports.

McKinley Park
A beautiful Sacramento park, recently refurbished, is also a haven for amateur sports enthusiasts. Baseball fields, horseshoe sand pits, a soccer field and tennis courts are available. Picnickers will find tables and barbecue apparatus scattered around this large park, measuring four blocks square. The wholesome atmosphere is reinforced by plenty of sturdy wooden playground equipment, jungle gyms, swings and slides for the kids. Joggers living in nearby Midtown neighborhoods make extensive use of the trail circling the park.

Sacramento Zoo
Home to more than 400 animals, including the snow leopard, red panda, Bateleur eagles and reptiles. In addition to the animals, the zoo has two lakes. Butterfly and hummingbird gardens as well as a camellia garden complete with animal sculptures. The zoo offers lectures and tours. Services and amenities also include picnic areas, concessions, a gift store, stroller rentals and complimentary wheelchairs. Children under 3 are admitted free.

The Granite Wall
This facility offers many different climbing challenges. The floors are padded, just in case you fall. If you are a beginner, you must take a safety class before you can climb. The climbing wall is 35 feet tall and has handholds capable of being moved into a variety of configurations. Children are welcome to climb with parental permission.

Jedediah Smith Memorial Bicycle Trail
Offering 23 miles of scenic trails for bicyclists (extending from Old Sacramento to Beal's Point at Folsom Lake), hikers, equestrians and other foot traffic, the versatile parkway is virtually unlimited in its recreational scope.

Sports

Sports enthusiasts can attend a sporting event and cheer for a professional team in nearby Sacramento.

Sacramento Kings
Sacramento’s National Basketball Association team since 1985. Playing at the ARCO Arena.

Sacramento Monarchs
Women’s National Basketball Association. In 2005, the team brought Sacramento its first major championship in a professional sport, winning the WNBA Finals for the first time. Playing at the ARCO Arena.

Sacramento Rivercats
Minor League Baseball Team. The Rivercats play at Raley Field in the Pacific Coast League and are the Triple-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics.
